The question of marketing yourself.
Happy new year! well it’s almost the end of January but that’s ok!
2021, here we come, here’s to more interesting scripts, more opportunities to work with new people, 50 odd more ‘Wellness Collective’ episodes (that thing just keeps chugging!) a new job working on a brand new radio concept…. and who knows what else?
This is the joy of freelancing right?
Over the Summer I have had a bit of a think about marketing myself when it’s just me, and if I’m honest I feel a bit weird about it. For years I have relied on my agent to do it for me, but I’m dipping my toe in a bit too. Why not?
well, how do you feel about telling people how great you are at your job?
If you’re like me, of my generation, and female, and Australian, you might feel a bit awkward about it too.
But I have realised that over the years I have really acquired a set of unique skills, (as we all have in our given fields over 10 plus years) and worked on hundreds of different scripts and projects, with different directors, producers, studios, home and abroad. So I should be proud of that , and confident that I can use something from my tool kit of those skills which include voicing, presenting, learning, coaching, editing, podcasting, radio producing to get the job done, each time!
I’ll give you an example. After xmas I opened my email to find I had been included in Voquent’s top 20 voice artists of 2020. A worldwide list, of people who Voquent found to be professional, easy and quick and fun to work with and who got the job done easily. There I was, on the list, right at the bottom, (but hey it’s Australia we are used to being at the bottom of the world) but I was there!
I was blown away.
I have never had recognition of any formal kind for my work and this year we got a Silver award in the Australian Podcast Awards and then this. Just blown away. I don’t win awards!!!
I did share this news on social media, because I was so excited, but then I found it hard to know the right amount of sharing that was ok before I just started being boring and annoying and needy!
I think the answer to that is different for everyone.
And so I’ve decided to look at as if I was my friend Alison who’s a chef/ baker. She creates delicious masterpieces on a daily basis, and she may post pics on insta and share her tasty treats with people and get their mouths watering. But it gets the message across. People can see what she makes and how good at it she is!
Mine is a slightly different realm, but a creative one nonetheless.
So this year I will be sharing small tasty jobs, snippets of delicious animations and mouthwatering testimonials!
And hopefully that will show, if nothing else, what I know.
