Are you a slashy?
Oh boy, I do not publish blog posts often enough! But 2021 has gotten off to a big bang work and study wise and truly, sitting and putting thoughts together for a blog, has been way down the list.
And the reason why I’ve been flat out is that I have finally come to terms with the fact that I am indeed officially now, a ‘slashy’.
Many of us freelancers live this way, working in multiple roles, and sometimes it’s to make ends meet, and sometimes it’s to keep us busy, and sometimes it’s because some opportunities are just too good to pass up!
It’s interesting that the idea of working multiple jobs is generally deemed to be something that people who can’t make a living doing one job would do, but that stereotype doesn’t take us creatives into consideration really does it?
So late last year (Radio Veteran and all round legendary lady)Jo Stanley approached me to see if I’d be interested helping her to produce shows on her new venture Broad Radio. I met Jo when I started working at Fox Fm in the mid naughties, she was the only woman on air, she was ace.
I’ve always admired her and her work ethic, so again, when she asked if I was keen to work with her on Broad Radio, I wasn’t going to say no, even if it meant finding another few hours to squeeze out of a week!
So come Jan 2021, Broad Radio launched.
Basically the idea of it is that it’s a radio station for women, by women (although not in the old skool sense, it’s video AND audio AND we use FB and Youtube rather than a $$$ frequency, thank you technology!!).
But isn’t there radio for women already? (I hear you ask)
Well, yes there is radio that is programmed for a female audience, but there aren’t many women in the programming side of the equation still, and that’s part of the difference of Broad. Plus how much to women over 35 love podcasts.. a lot! And why? Because they hear stories, information, ideas that they don’t always hear on regular radio.
Being involved with something from the ground up is amazing, seeing the other women involved who are so clever with tech, social media, marketing, all the guests, from comedians and mucicians to scientists and entrepreneurs, to regular women who just want the chance to share their unique stories, everyone is excited, and so far no one has said no they don’t want to be a part of it.
Why would they?
So I come back to my first point. All of a sudden I have had to add another title to my email signature.
I’m a voice artist (slash) a podcaster (slash) and show producer (slash) mother, wife, student, crafter.. anyway.. you get the idea.
What a privilege that is.
