Internationally significant.
one of my international avenues…
I have a good friend, he’s a very talented and committed architect and well if you know me you’ll know who I mean, but I won’t dob him in by name right now!
Because I am using him as my inspiration for this blog.
Why?
Because years ago he worked in China, and then in London, working on some amazing buildings and projects and just being really creative and awesome. (I’m sure that’s what his CV says, creative and awesome!)
So when he came back to Australia and was working on a fancy apartment development, there was an article written about him that described him as ‘Internationally significant!’
We had a laugh!
It sounds like a pretty funny (read wanky) way to describe things after all, but guess what, it was actually true! And impressive!
He worked his butt off all over the world and he was being recognized for it. Yay go him!
It got me thinking though how different our industries were, as a voice actor, the pool of work here in Australia has seemed restrictive in some ways, we are a large island with a small population, and I have always wondered how I could make any in roads with my accent to anywhere but, well maybe New Zealand!
But then, thanks to the wonders of the internet I discovered that I could stretch my wings a bit, that there were ways to find voice jobs, new clients and opportunities outside of our big blue border and that was thanks to the marvelous guys at Voquent. I signed up with them in the UK, and discovered that I could reach a few more opportunities that wouldn’t have come through my wonderful Aussie agent EM Voices. Then I discovered a few avenues in the US, which is such a massive and extraordinary voice market, where competition is fierce, but I’ve managed to get some jobs and have voiced IVRs, locazized products and read for Amazon music with Procomm Voices, and Impressive Talent.
I’ve discovered that working with people in other countries is a new and exciting challenge, it keeps me focused on the service I provide, it makes me hav to factor in time difference and equipment set ups and I’m enjoying seeing what their expectations are.
This is what Alex, Producer at Voquent had to say about working with me:
"Cecelia is a wonderful voice actor, and she always nails exactly what the client wants super quickly! She 's also a delight to work with, and is always willing to accommodate the enormous time differences we have to deal with between the UK and Australia. Highly recommended!"
I’m always on the look out for the next Voice acting challenge, and this one is a ride. Waking up and checking emails that have come through in the night for auditions or job ops gives me a real buzz.
As a wise friend of mine said to me once ‘There’s always more…’ and she’s right!
So while I would say that I have a way to go before a journalist might call me ‘Internationally significant’ I am at least international, and loving it!
